December 22nd - The Music of the Game

Volume up, headphones on Blogmonauts!

Behind door 22 are some more of our extended cast of animal friends, exchanging gifts at an Xmas soiree whilst wearing cool jumpers that frankly, I'd snap up for my collection any day.

Today's blogpost is about the music of Festive Finds: Happy Holidays Calendar. Given that we figured a lot of people would probably play the game like an advent calendar and open one door a day, and we'd intended the differences to be on the family friendly level of difficulty, not freakin' fiendish AND we were trying to keep away from super God-y tracks, the soundtrack loop for the game is fairly short. Would you believe that most of the festive songs in the public domain are actually very religious indeed? Well, now you know!

We figured it was ok to talk about "Christmas time" and selected those ones to re-interpret and re-invent in a chill, lo-fi remixed way. So there are versions of Jingle Bells, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, O Christmas Tree, Deck the Halls and Here We Come A-wassailing. The wassailing song is in 6/8 time, which Fay says is frankly, some bulls**t :-) Each song involved Fay figuring out the melody and chords and inputting those into Reaper as MIDI notes, then building up the song with additional melodies and backing from there.

There's also an instrumental of an original song, that you can hear on the title screen, and as part of the loop in the main game, that Fay wrote. As always, Fay writes her songs on ukulele, and today, she put up an acoustic demo of that song, with the original lyrics as she wrote it on Youtube. It's called Gift My Heart, and we think it's pretty great. The fact that it's about me (Martyn that is) is something I still can't get my head around. Since this now me talking, I've had this song stuck in my head for weeks, I think it's absurdly catchy and brilliant. My pensioner parents were playing the game when I saw them a few days ago, and told me that they didn't recognise one of the Christmas songs, but they really liked it :-)

Here's the vocal version of the song, I (and we) hope you enjoy it:

Only a few more sleeps 'til Christmas!

Love always,

Martyn & Fay
